Yoga for Beginners

Material Overview

Nothing here assumes you have unrolled a mat before. The foundational postures are described one by one, together with breathing, stretching, balance and the quieter practices that close a routine. You will read how yoga supports flexibility, strength, posture and stress relief, and why moving slowly is the safe way in. Later levels join the poses into gentle routines that suit any starting point and improve mobility and clarity over time.

Level · Beginner
Purpose

A first yoga practice should feel manageable rather than impressive. This level introduces a small number of poses properly, with the breathing that belongs to them and a way out of each one.

Outcome

You will practise for fifteen minutes at home without following a video, recognise the difference between a genuine stretch and a strain, and finish noticeably calmer than when you started.

What You'll Learn

  • Standing, seated and lying postures, where your weight belongs in each, breathing in time with movement, using a block or strap without embarrassment, what discomfort is acceptable, and a fifteen minute sequence to repeat
Credits 150 CREDITS
Level · Intermediate
Purpose

Individual poses become a practice when they connect. This level joins them into sequences and introduces the balances and gentle inversions that were deliberately left out of the first level.

Outcome

The difference afterwards is a continuous thirty minute sequence you can move through, a standing balance held without gripping the floor, and poses adjusted for your body rather than forced.

What You'll Learn

  • Linking poses with the breath, sun salutation variations, standing balances, shoulder and hip opening, forward folds without rounding badly, gentle twists, and building a thirty minute practice of your own

Level · Advanced
Purpose

Beyond a certain point yoga becomes precise rather than harder. This level is about refinement: the same poses done with better alignment, longer holds and attention on the parts nobody notices at first.

Outcome

Expect to finish able to hold demanding poses with control instead of tension, work steadily towards a balance you cannot yet do, and build a practice that addresses your own restrictions honestly.

What You'll Learn

  • Alignment details joint by joint, longer holds and what they change, arm balances approached in stages, deeper backbends safely, breath control practices, and building a practice around what your body resists rather than what it enjoys
Credits 665 CREDITS
Level · Expert
Purpose

This last level looks beyond the poses to the ideas and the anatomy underneath them, including how a practice should change for a body that is injured, pregnant, stiff or sixty years old.

Outcome

The value of this level is explaining why a pose is arranged as it is, adapting any sequence for a body that cannot do the standard version, and practising thoughtfully for decades rather than seasons.

What You'll Learn

  • Functional anatomy of common postures, contraindications worth respecting, modifying a sequence for a specific limitation, the philosophical background of the practice, meditation in more depth, and sequencing safely for a group of very mixed bodies
